Corn Belt Power Cooperative, headquartered in Humboldt, Iowa, is a generation and transmission (G&T) electric cooperative owned by its member systems.

Corn Belt Power provides electricity to 10 member distribution electric cooperatives and one municipal electric cooperative (NIMECA) that serve farm members, rural residences, small towns and commercial and industrial members in 41 counties in northern Iowa.

Assets
Corn Belt Power has approximately $328 million in total assets and has 96 employees.

Service and Reliability
Reliable service is a high priority for Corn Belt Power Cooperative. A diligent maintenance program and unparalleled service have consistently produced reliability figures of 99.99%.

There's more to an electric cooperative than providing affordable power. Corn Belt Power Cooperative works to improve the quality of life for its members and their communities. Corn Belt Power actively promotes economic development efforts, environmental programs and energy efficiency initiatives.

Generation
A fall- peaking utility due to its rural-based crop drying load, Corn Belt Power set its highest peak load in November 2009 at 340 megawatts.

Corn Belt Power Cooperative has one wholly owned coal-fired power plant and a gas combustion turbine generator; Corn Belt is a joint owner of three coal-fired power plants and one nuclear power plant:

  • Neal #4 (coal), Sioux City - 75 megawatts
  • Duane Arnold Energy Center (nuclear), Palo - 58 megawatts
  • Wisdom Unit 1 (coal), Spencer - 38 megawatts
  • Wisdom Unit 2 (natural gas/fuel oil), Spencer - 40 megawatts
  • Walter Scott, Jr. Energy Center Unit 3 (coal), Council Bluffs - 26 megawatts
  • Walter Scott, Jr. Energy Center Unit 4 (coal), Council Bluffs - 42 megawatts

 

Corn Belt Power Cooperative has available these additional sources of power:

  • Western Area Power Administration (hydro), - 27 megawatts
  • Webster City Combustion Turbine (fuel oil), Webster City - 25 megawatts
  • Hancock County Wind Energy Center (wind), Duncan and Klemme - 11 megawatts
  • Crosswind Energy (wind), Ayrshire - 21 megawatts
  • Basin Electric Power Cooperative (coal and wind), - 50 megawatts
  • Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative (wind), Superior and Lakota - 21 megawatts


Corn Belt Power sells all of its generation output to Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Bismarck, North Dakota. Then, as a Class A all supplemental requirements member of Basin Electric, Corn Belt Power buys from Basin Electric all of its power needs above its hydropower allocation and an original 50 megawatt contract with Basin.

Transmission
Corn Belt Power owns and operates more than 1,700 miles of high voltage transmission line and owns and services 149 distribution substations and 44 switching stations. More than 30 microwave towers provide instant communication to operate radio-controlled switches. The System Control Center is staffed 24 hours a day to monitor generation and transmission. Service crews are located at Humboldt headquarters, Hampton Service Center and Emmetsburg Service Center.
